Happy Holidays!

Wow what an amazing term!

The focus on fairy tales and nursery rhymes has been a lot of fun.
The children have done some wonderful learning in all areas, but especially with their ability to write using great story starters and including more adjectives and verbs to bring their writing alive. We have also been learning to sequence story ideas and write appropriate captions. During the latter part of the term we have been using De Bono’s Thinking Hats to think in depth about things we do at school, but especially with our writing. I have been impressed with the way the children have taken this on-board and readily adopted their ‘hats’ when being reflective.

"That's Entertainment."

And wasn't it entertaining!
Room 10 students were fantastic. They acted and sung beautifully.
Thank you for your support with costumes, helping the children learn their parts and encouragement.
I am very proud of their performance.

Blends.
We have been looking at triple blends during the last few weeks, str, scr, spl spr. It would be helpful if you were able to draw attention to these when reading or writing during the holidays. Perhaps play some games to help consolidate their learning.
Eg: “I am thinking of something that begins like str and you use it to tie a parcel up with.”

Production

Writing
We have been using De Bono's Thinking Hats to reflect upon our performance in the production of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

The White hat is all about the facts,

The Yellow hat explains what we are good at.
The Green hat says what we could be better at.

This was a first attempt at thinking critically.

How do you think we did?

The Pied Piper of Hamelin

We have been working hard at learning all of the things we have to do.

We are now very good at acting!
Those rats are creepy!

That Pied Piper, he really thinks the children will go with him.

How silly is he!

But.. will they follow him?

Come along on Thursday and find out.

Week 7

Production

The Production work is well underway and everyone is becoming very excited.
We have sneaky rats, a majestic mayor, playful piper and many more.
Costumes are due at school in a sturdy, named bag this coming Wednesday the 9th of September. Thank you to all who have already returned theirs.

Maths
We are looking at time over the next few weeks. Distinguishing between daytime and night-time, breaking daytime into morning and afternoon and then into yesterday and tomorrow. It would be helpful if you were to explore your child's concept of days, weeks, months and years. One of the discussion points this week centred around what they thought they would be doing in ten year's time. It ranged from being in bed asleep to flying around the world.

Writing
We are reading and writing fairy tales and thinking critically about the story and the message the author is trying to get across.
We have been looking at making our writing more interesting by using a snappy beginning sentence and lots of adjectives.
Here are a few for you to enjoy reading
